Child and Family Studies: Early Childhood Education (Birth - Kindergarten) (MAT)

Become the teacher you have always wanted to be and earn a master’s degree in the process. UNC Charlotte's Master of Arts in Teaching programs allow students to become a self-reflective master teacher, in addition to developing advanced competencies as a teacher-researcher and a teacher-leader. Please note the CHFD program is alternating the Child and Family Studies: Early Education (Birth – Kindergarten), M.A.T. and the M.Ed. in Special Education and Child Development: Child and Family Studies Concentration programs. The next cohort of M.A.T. students is scheduled to begin in Summer 2025.

Civil Engineering (MSCE)

The Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering offers graduate studies in five areas of concentration: environmental and water resources engineering, geo-environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and materials, and transportation engineering. Areas of focus include Environmental, Geo-Environmental, Bio-Environmental, Structural, Transportation, Forensics, Sustainable Design, Energy and Land Development.

Civil Engineering (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in civil engineering will provide doctoral-level education for students seeking civil engineering careers in practice, research and teaching/academia. The William States Lee College of Engineering’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department will administer the program, which will be housed in the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center building, a $76-million state-of-the-art facility. The Ph.D. program also will support students conducting research within unique centers and facilities, including the U.S. Department of Transportation-funded Center for Advanced Multimodal Mobility Solutions and Education (CAMMSE); the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Sustainably Integrated Building and Sites (SIBS); the Infrastructure, Design, Environment and Sustainability (IDEAS) center; the Infrastructure Security and Emergency Responder Research and Training (ISERRT) Facility; and the Center for Transportation Policy Studies. The American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), which is the primary professional organization for civil engineers, now views a master’s degree as the entry-level degree for the profession. With jobs in the industry expected to increase during the next decade by 20 percent, higher numbers of engineers are expected to pursue a Ph.D. to distinguish themselves in the market.

Cognitive Science (CERT)

Cognitive Science is a dynamic, interdisciplinary field devoted to understanding the mind and intelligent behavior. It brings together knowledge and methods from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy, and neuroscience. The Graduate Certificate in Cognitive Science provides an introduction to the conceptual foundations and methods of the field, including in-depth exploration of technical skills for analyzing behavior in human and artificial systems. The ability to understand, predict, and augment human behavior is applicable to a broad range of career paths, including data science, healthcare, software and interaction design, government and education.

Communication Studies (MA)

The graduate program in Communication Studies is a generalist program in that students don't specialize in any one area but instead take courses across five areas of interest: Health Communication, Rhetorical/Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Organizational Communication, and Public Relations. The program offers a blend of theory and praxis. Students receive rigorous training in theory and research methods, and they also have the opportunity to explore and deepen their own interests through their elective courses and their capstone project.

Computer Science (MS)

Admits to: Fall, Spring The Master of Science in Computer Science provides students with advanced skills and knowledge in planning, design, implementation, testing and management of computer systems and applications. These skills form excellent foundations for doctoral study, research or teaching in Computer Science, and are necessary for dealing with problems encountered in various computer applications in business, industry and governmental agencies for those holding related technical or managerial positions.

Construction and Facilities Engineering (MS)

The Master of Science in Construction and Facilities Engineering opens the door to many exciting and challenging professional careers. The Department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management at UNC Charlotte is committed to providing the environment and expertise to ensure that its graduates make substantive contributions in their professional endeavors after graduation, both in the areas of technical proficiency and community involvement.

Counseling (MA)

Admits to: Summer (can begin classes in summer or fall) Deadline: October 15 The Master's of Arts in Counseling has three concentrations: (a) Addiction Counseling, (b) School Counseling and (c) Clinical Mental Health Counseling. While each concentration has similar core course requirements, there are some important differences. The Addiction Counseling concentration prepares students to work effectively in various treatment settings and with a variety of addictive behaviors. School Counseling concentration prepares students to be effective educational leaders while providing a variety of counseling services to children and adolescents in both public and private schools. Clinical Mental Health Counseling concentration prepares students to provide a variety of counseling services to children, adolescents and adults through agencies, nonprofit organizations, corporations and private practice. Finally, students can add on to each of these areas a concentration in Play Therapy .

Counselor Education and Supervision (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Counseling is committed to preparing multiculturally competent, ethical, clinically skilled, and knowledgeable professionals for positions as counselor educators in university settings or as clinicians and/or counselor supervisors in schools and community settings. Students in the program strive to acquire knowledge, values, and skills that are relevant to providing quality direct service to diverse populations.
