Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (Ph.D.)

The age of biological big data is upon us and there is a need for graduates at all levels who combine an understanding of biology with skills in programming, statistics and modeling. The Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is an interdisciplinary program that provides students with the skills and knowledge to analyze large scale biological data and develop new computational strategies. BCB PhD graduates are employed worldwide in academia and industry. Key program application deadlines: Jan. 1 for Fall admission and Sept. 1 for Spring admission.

Biology (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Biology has as its intellectual focus an interdisciplinary synthesis of the biological sciences and related biotechnology. The program draws upon the strengths of faculty in multiple departments and is intended to serve students with interests in conducting research in academia, industry and clinical settings. Graduates of the program will be well versed in quantitative approaches to Biology. The interdisciplinary makeup of the program is designed to produce graduates who will be able to integrate the strengths of more than one discipline in solving biological problems.

Business Administration (DBA)

Business Administration: Finance (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Business Administration is a full-time research-oriented program, designed to prepare graduates for academic teaching and research careers. The program includes core courses covering all business disciplines, combined with in-depth study in both theoretical and empirical aspects of finance. Students admitted to the finance program minor in economics will complete a research methods sequence in mathematics. Students also will teach undergraduate courses to receive training in pedagogy. Graduates will be qualified for tenure-track professor positions at both national and international research and teaching universities and other educational institutions.

Chemistry and Nanoscale Science (Ph.D.)

The Chemistry and Nanoscale Science Ph.D. is an interdisciplinary program that addresses the development, manipulation, and use of materials and devices on the scale of roughly 1-100 nanometers in length, and the study of phenomena that occur on this size scale. The program prepares students to become scholarly, practicing scientists who possess the critical thinking, methodological and communication skills required to advance and disseminate knowledge of fundamental and applied nanoscale science.

Civil Engineering (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in civil engineering will provide doctoral-level education for students seeking civil engineering careers in practice, research and teaching/academia. The William States Lee College of Engineering’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department will administer the program, which will be housed in the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center building, a $76-million state-of-the-art facility. The Ph.D. program also will support students conducting research within unique centers and facilities, including the U.S. Department of Transportation-funded Center for Advanced Multimodal Mobility Solutions and Education (CAMMSE); the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Sustainably Integrated Building and Sites (SIBS); the Infrastructure, Design, Environment and Sustainability (IDEAS) center; the Infrastructure Security and Emergency Responder Research and Training (ISERRT) Facility; and the Center for Transportation Policy Studies. The American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), which is the primary professional organization for civil engineers, now views a master’s degree as the entry-level degree for the profession. With jobs in the industry expected to increase during the next decade by 20 percent, higher numbers of engineers are expected to pursue a Ph.D. to distinguish themselves in the market.

Counselor Education and Supervision (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Counseling is committed to preparing multiculturally competent, ethical, clinically skilled, and knowledgeable professionals for positions as counselor educators in university settings or as clinicians and/or counselor supervisors in schools and community settings. Students in the program strive to acquire knowledge, values, and skills that are relevant to providing quality direct service to diverse populations.

Curriculum and Instruction (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction is designed to prepare teacher education faculty and other educational professionals for work in various agency and educational settings. The program is interdisciplinary and involves faculty from across the University campus, primarily Departments of English, Mathematics and Statistics, Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education, Reading and Elementary Education and Educational Leadership. The program focuses on urban issues and perspectives related to curriculum and instruction with concentrations in: - Curriculum and Educator Development (CED) (includes Elementary Education) - Learning, Design, and Technology (LDT) - Literacy Education (oriented toward Reading Education, English Education, or Teaching English as a Second Language) - Mathematics Education - Urban Education

Data Science (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Data Science (DTSC) is transdisciplinary by design and lays emphasis on the mastery of the data science tools and methodologies and on responsible stewardship of data to cover the broad value of data science in various domains across society. Strong emphasis is placed on providing students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of knowledge in multiple data science application domains. The program provides research intensive doctoral-level education for students seeking Data Science careers in practice, research and teaching/academia. It is intended to produce researchers fluent in the emerging field of data science and to develop an environment for their education and training. The objectives of the Data Science Ph.D. include: - Preparing research data scientists, professional data scientists, and scholars/academicians who will be leaders in developing, maintaining, and managing data ethically and effectually to sustain the economic and social vibrancy of North Carolina and the United States; - Developing research data scientists who have a deep understanding of data, statistics, computing, and ethics frameworks such that they can build new knowledge across fields and society by appropriate data collection, methods development, and deep analysis; - Providing a range of educational and research experiences for a diverse group of students to participate in research initiatives at UNC Charlotte, Private, Public, and International institutions; and, - Preparing future data science educators, and scholars, who are at the frontiers of understanding and disseminating data science knowledge.
