Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation prepares education professionals who seek advanced research, data analyses, and evaluation skills for positions in a wide variety of educational institutions including higher education, K-12 school districts, for-profit companies, nonprofit agencies, community colleges, think tanks, government organizations, and other institutions concerned with solving problems in education. The Ph.D. program targets experienced educators who hold a masters’ degree in a related educational field. Individuals that are attracted to the new program will seek to deepen their research skills for improving education programs. Other students may pursue the Ph.D. as a means of transitioning into a career in higher education.

Electrical and Computer Engineering (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering provides advanced knowledge and research experience in a chosen area of electrical and computer engineering. Successful doctoral candidates learn how to acquire advanced knowledge from published research articles, identify research problems, formulate plausible approaches to solve them, analyze and evaluate proposed solutions, and present technical material orally and in writing.

Geography (Ph.D.)

The PhD in Geography is the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences' core doctoral program reflecting the multi-disciplinary research and teaching expertise of our exceptional and award winning faculty. Doctoral students engage in coursework from within and across three areas of focus: Urban and Regional Analysis, Earth and Environmental Systems, and Geographic Information Science. A broad range of electives build upon shared training in the theoretical and methodological foundations of Geography, advanced research approaches, spatial technologies and critical analysis. Independent research follows yielding a dissertation that advances knowledge in Geography and its related disciplines. The program is structured to be completed within 4 years and our graduates find professional success across the occupational spectrum - as tenure-track professors, international researchers, community planners, analysts with local to national scale governments, post-doctoral fellows, applied scientists, spatial entrepreneurs, private sector consultants and more.

Health Psychology (Ph.D.)

Health Psychologists use a multidisciplinary perspective to promote positive health behaviors, encourage behavioral change and behavioral maintenance. Health Psychologists are frequently part of multidisciplinary teams conducting research and delivering interventions in academic, clinical, research, governmental, and community settings. The Ph.D. in Health Psychology offers training in one of the following areas of emphasis: Clinical Psychology; Community Health Psychology; and General Health Psychology.

Health Services Research (Ph.D.)

Health services research is a field of scientific investigation that studies how financing systems, health technologies, organizational structures and processes, personal behaviors, social factors, and policies affect access to health care, quality and cost of health care, and societal health and well-being. It is an interdisciplinary field that draws on a wide range of disciplines, including biostatistics, epidemiology, sociology, social work, economics, medicine, nursing, public health, engineering, management, and policy studies. Health services research provides knowledge to guide the decisions of those who direct the billions of dollars allocated to health care each year in the United States and globally.

Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (INES) is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing innovations in design, analysis, construction and operation of civil, energy and environmental infrastructure; and the scientific analysis of environmental systems. The interdisciplinary program also involves the development and sustainable use of renewable resources, and the protection of our earth and its environmental systems. The interplay between the environment and infrastructure is thoroughly studied by students as they confront the challenges facing urbanizing regions.

Mathematics (applied) (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. degree program in Applied Mathematics is designed to enable students to master a significant body of mathematics, including a specialty in applied mathematics; relate this knowledge to a coherent area of science or engineering; and to carry on fundamental research in applied mathematics at a nationally competitive level. Recipients of this degree will, according to their abilities and choice of sub-specialty, be able to work effectively in a research and development environment involving mathematical or statistical analysis and modeling in business, government or industry; teach mathematics at the college or university level; or carry on fundamental research in their area of specialty.

Nanoscale Science (Ph.D.)

The Nanoscale Science Ph.D. is an interdisciplinary program that addresses the development, manipulation, and use of materials and devices on the scale of roughly 1-100 nanometers in length, and the study of phenomena that occur on this size scale. The program prepares students to become scholarly, practicing scientists who possess the critical thinking, methodological, and communication skills required to advance and disseminate knowledge of fundamental and applied nanoscale science.

Optical Science and Engineering (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Optical Science and Engineering is interdisciplinary, involving primarily five science and engineering departments and two centers (Departments of Physics & Optical Science, Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering & Engineering Science; the Center for Optoelectronics & Optical Communications; and the Center for Precision Metrology). The purpose of the program is to educate scientists and engineers who will develop the next generation of optical technology.
