Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

The Doctor of Nursing Practice is the terminal practice degree in Nursing. This degree builds upon the student's current knowledge of clinical practice. The program will prepare students to practice at the highest clinical level and provide leadership in our dynamic healthcare systems. Graduates of the program will be able to analyze systems of care and provide high level leadership to improve patient safety and quality of care and to implement evidence-based culturally competent care practices. The School of Nursing offers two concentrations: BSN to DNP: Nurse Anesthesia Across the Lifespan (Admits to: Summer; Location: On Campus; Deadline: Jun 10-Aug interviews, Sep 10-Nov interviews) We provide students with both the theory and clinical practice required to meet the educational requirements to take the national certifying examination upon graduation. The specialty in Nurse Anesthesia Across the Lifespan is offered in partnership with Atrium Health. Clinical experiences are offered at Atrium Health facilities in the Charlotte area. Post-Master’s DNP (Admits to: Fall; Location-Online; Deadline: Mar 1-priority, Aug 1-final) Our post-master's is designed to prepare health systems and organizational nursing leaders (non-APRNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to lead nursing practice, organizations, and systems of care through the translation and application of evidence-based research into practice.

Educational Leadership (Ed.D.)

The Ed.D. program in Educational Leadership is designed to prepare educational administrators who can assume mid-level and senior-level leadership positions in universities or community colleges and public or non-public schools. The program includes Higher Education, Superintendency (School and District Leadership), and Learning, Design and Technology concentrations. Applicants to the Ed.D. in Higher Education should apply to the Educational Leadership (EDD) program (Main Campus Program). Applicants to the Ed.D. in Superintendency should apply to the Educational Leadership (Off-Campus - Mecklenburg County: Mallard Creek High School program) (DE). Applicants to the Ed.D. in Learning, Design and Technology - is offered in a blended format, 80% online and 20% on main campus (Online) (DE). All concentrations of the Ed.D. program deliver courses in a blend of face-to-face, hybrid, and online. None of the concentrations are 100% online. All programs require a face-to-face presence. The percentage of time needed for face-to-face varies based on the semester and selected courses. Admission for Fall 2024 is complete. Please apply for Fall 2025. Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation prepares education professionals who seek advanced research, data analyses, and evaluation skills for positions in a wide variety of educational institutions including higher education, K-12 school districts, for-profit companies, nonprofit agencies, community colleges, think tanks, government organizations and other institutions concerned with solving problems in education. The Ph.D. program targets experienced educators who hold a master's degree in a related educational field. Individuals that are attracted to the new program will seek to deepen their research skills for improving education programs. Other students may pursue the Ph.D. as a means of transitioning into a career in higher education.

Electrical and Computer Engineering (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering provides advanced knowledge and research experience in a chosen area of electrical and computer engineering. Successful doctoral candidates learn how to acquire advanced knowledge from published research articles, identify research problems, formulate plausible approaches to solve them, analyze and evaluate proposed solutions, and present technical material orally and in writing.

Epidemiology (PHD)

Epidemiology, a core discipline of public health, is the study of the distribution and risk factors of diseases and health conditions in populations. Our post-master’s Ph.D. program in Epidemiology prepares future researchers and public health practitioners to develop and conduct studies and apply quantitative methods to understand and solve complex public health problems. The program, through its rigorous coursework in epidemiologic and public health methods, electives and teaching experience, prepares graduates for a career in academia, government or industry. Full-time students can complete the degree requirements within 4 years; however, most full-time students complete the program within 5 years, depending on the design of their dissertation research.

Geography (Ph.D.)

The PhD in Geography is the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences' core doctoral program reflecting the multi-disciplinary research and teaching expertise of our exceptional and award winning faculty. Doctoral students engage in coursework from within and across three areas of focus: Urban and Regional Analysis, Earth and Environmental Systems and Geographic Information Science. A broad range of electives build upon shared training in the theoretical and methodological foundations of Geography, advanced research approaches, spatial technologies and critical analysis. Independent research follows yielding a dissertation that advances knowledge in Geography and its related disciplines. The program is structured to be completed within 4 years and our graduates find professional success across the occupational spectrum - as tenure-track professors, international researchers, community planners, analysts with local to national scale governments, post-doctoral fellows, applied scientists, spatial entrepreneurs, private sector consultants and more.

Health Psychology (Ph.D.)

Health Psychologists use a multidisciplinary perspective to promote positive health behaviors, encourage behavioral change and behavioral maintenance. Health Psychologists are frequently part of multidisciplinary teams conducting research and delivering interventions in academic, clinical, research, governmental and community settings. The Ph.D. in Health Psychology offers training in one of the following areas of emphasis: Clinical Psychology, Community Health Psychology or General Health Psychology.

Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (INES) is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing innovations in design, analysis, construction and operation of civil, energy and environmental infrastructure and the scientific analysis of environmental systems. The interdisciplinary program also involves the development and sustainable use of renewable resources and the protection of our earth and its environmental systems. The interplay between the environment and infrastructure is thoroughly studied by students as they confront the challenges facing urbanizing regions.

Mathematics (applied) (Ph.D.)

The Ph.D. degree program in Applied Mathematics is designed to enable students to master a significant body of mathematics, including a specialty in applied mathematics; relate this knowledge to a coherent area of science or engineering; and to carry on fundamental research in applied mathematics at a nationally competitive level. Recipients of this degree will, according to their abilities and choice of sub-specialty, be able to work effectively in a research and development environment involving mathematical or statistical analysis and modeling in business, government or industry; teach mathematics at the college or university level; or carry on fundamental research in their area of specialty.
