Jessica Cochran on what she wishes she knew as a first-year M.S. student.

Embarking on the journey of a master's program is similar to entering a labyrinth — exciting yet daunting, filled with twists and turns. Reflecting on my own experiences, here are some invaluable insights I wish I had possessed as a first-year Master's student.

Time management emerges as a pivotal skill. The whirlwind of coursework, assignments, and personal commitments, mastering time becomes imperative. I wish I had found out earlier the power of the Pomodoro Technique, where you work in focused intervals with short breaks. It helped me to get started on overwhelming assignments.

The realm of work, whether on or off-campus, presents both opportunities and challenges. As a first-year student, I underestimated the value of an on-campus job vs an off-campus one. I highly recommend an on-campus job because most will work around a student’s school schedule. Plus, Hire-A-Niner is an excellent resource to have.

Extracurricular activities are critical to feeling connected with campus. Never underestimate the significance of engaging with student organizations, events, and volunteer work. These ventures have not only complemented my academic life but also fostered personal growth and expanded my professional networks. I wish I had recognized earlier the amazing opportunities that being around like-minded people will have on you.

Internships stand as pillars of experiential learning, providing invaluable insights and industry exposure. I am incredibly lucky to have found a company that has carved the path to a career for me. Securing internships, whether through university resources or personal networking, opens doors to practical application, mentorship, and potential careers. I now understand the importance of tailoring applications, honing interview skills, and seeking feedback to maximize internship prospects. I recommend the Career Center to help students reach their full potential.

In conclusion, navigating the Master's maze necessitates a multifaceted approach encompassing time management, work-life balance, active involvement, and strategic internship pursuits. Armed with these insights, first-year Master's students can chart a course that transcends mere academic achievement, fostering holistic growth and professional development. As I reflect on my own journey, I am reminded that while the Master's labyrinth may be confusing, with perseverance, foresight, and campus resources, students can gain unparalleled growth and fulfillment.
