What has been your driving force for enrolling in your degree program?
I enjoy designing spaces for people to occupy and finding out what I can do to make those spaces as good an experience as possible. The David R. Ravin School of Architecture has many tools that I can take advantage of, such as a workshop for working with metal and wood, a library for research, and professors with experience in the field.
Why did you choose UNC Charlotte over other universities?
The first thing that attracted me was the campus. It is a very beautiful campus that is close to Uptown Charlotte. Then, the cost, as it was the most affordable option when compared to other schools with my program in North Carolina. Finally, the opportunities and resources available to me that I saw would be part of my program convinced me that this was a school that could help me achieve my goals and discover new ones.
What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?
The School of Architecture has a very collaborative spirit. I have loved being part of my cohort and getting to know each of them as both people and designers.
Are you involved in any student organizations or clubs? How has your involvement in these organizations enhanced your graduate experience?
I am the community/service chair for the United States Green Building Council in the School of Architecture. This position has allowed me to meet other students with similar interests, as well as learn about the different facets of sustainability that can be applied to the greater Charlotte community. It has also shown me that I am interested in architectural research, something I hope to explore during my time here.
What are some of your favorite activities or places to visit in Charlotte outside of campus?
I love going to Carowinds! I enjoy riding the roller coasters and they are actually great for stress relief.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying to your program?
My program is for students who do not have a background in architecture. Many times it can be daunting for people who are switching from an unrelated field to go into architecture. I would say if you are interested in architecture, you should give it a shot! You may be surprised by what you will learn, both about architecture and your own abilities. Plus, you will have many people to support you and help you along the way.
