Sohana Zaman shares advice on the importance of making connections in graduate school.

As an economics student at UNC Charlotte, I embarked on a transformative journey that not only enriched my academic experience but also fostered meaningful connections with peers, professors and professionals. Charlotte's commitment to providing ample opportunities for networking and community-building played a pivotal role in shaping my graduate school experience.

One of the most striking aspects of my program at UNC Charlotte was its emphasis on creating avenues for connection. From the outset, I discovered a myriad of opportunities designed to facilitate interaction and collaboration. Whether through class discussions, group projects or seminars led by esteemed professors, I found myself constantly engaged in dialogue with my peers and mentors. These interactions not only enriched my understanding of economic theory but also forged lasting bonds that extended beyond the classroom.

Furthermore, UNC Charlotte's vibrant campus community offered a plethora of events tailored to fostering social connections. From painting classes to cooking workshops and various meet-and-greet gatherings, there was no shortage of opportunities to engage with fellow students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. Exploring the campus's scenic lakes and inviting spaces provided an ideal backdrop for forging new friendships and expanding my social circle.

Central to my experience at UNC Charlotte was the invaluable support provided by the Career Center. Through personalized guidance and resources, the Career Center equipped me with the tools necessary to navigate the professional landscape successfully. From refining my resume to honing interview skills, their assistance proved instrumental in preparing me for future career endeavors. Moreover, their network of alumni and industry professionals offered invaluable insights and opportunities for mentorship, further solidifying the connection between academia and real-world applications.

In addition to the Career Center, the Thomas L. Reynolds Center for Graduate Life and Learning emerged as a hub for fostering connections and personal growth. Through a myriad of events and workshops, I had the opportunity to engage with peers from diverse disciplines, cultivating a sense of camaraderie and intellectual exchange. These interactions not only enriched my graduate experience but also provided a support system during challenging times.

Reflecting on my journey through graduate school at UNC Charlotte, I am grateful for the many opportunities that facilitated meaningful connections and personal growth. From engaging in stimulating academic discourse to forging friendships that transcend disciplinary boundaries, my experience underscores the importance of fostering a vibrant and inclusive community within higher education. As I embark on the next chapter of my professional journey, I carry with me the invaluable connections and experiences cultivated during my time at Charlotte, poised to make a meaningful impact in the world of economics and beyond.
