Graduate Student Insight: Keely Craig discusses their experience navigating their grad school search

There are many factors to consider when looking for a potential graduate program. You may want to think about what types of programs are offered by a university, the quality of programs, the school environment and what it will cost to pursue a graduate education. During my own search, I took into account all of these factors. After researching different graduate programs, I knew the Master's of Arts in Counseling program at UNC Charlotte was one of my top choices. This program checked all my boxes and after the interview process, I was sure it was the best fit for me.

I deeply appreciated how kind, considerate, informative, passionate and welcoming everyone in the counseling department was throughout the interview process. The professors and students who conducted the interview seemed to care about me both personally and professionally. They made a point to answer any questions asked, provided extensive information on the program and requirements, and created a warm and welcoming environment. Many of the other schools I had interviewed with made me feel more nervous and confused about my options; their focus seemed to be on what I could bring to the program rather than what the program could offer me. At UNC Charlotte, I immediately felt like I belonged and could truly make a difference with a degree in counseling.

After being admitted to UNC Charlotte’s counseling program, it was clear that I had chosen the best fit. The support and encouragement received in the application process carried over to my experiences within the program. The counseling program’s professors continue to be incredibly helpful and have shown how much they truly care about me in and out of the classroom. For example, one of my professors noticed I was not as talkative and seemed withdrawn in class and had a check-in with me after class. When I shared with them what was going on, they immediately made me feel comforted and encouraged me that things would turn out how they needed to. They also offered to talk more about the situation if I needed to and offered me an extension on a project coming up soon. The support received from this professor showed me how much empathy and compassion they had for their students, to actually check in on their well-being and offer practical ways that would help relieve some concerns. Additionally, all of my professors have been beyond helpful with the general guidance, advice and mentorship provided. They also put their empathy and compassion into action, as they continually check in on our well-being, academic goals and career aspirations throughout the program. The professors are extremely knowledgeable about their fields, share various experiences that better equip students for effective counseling and offer numerous resources to help students be leaders and advocates within their communities.

The graduate programs offered at UNC Charlotte not only provide students with a quality education at an affordable cost but also provide people with the resources needed to succeed in their respective fields. UNC Charlotte is focused on building personal and professional development. Especially regarding the counseling program, the faculty has my best interest in mind. I have grown personally, academically and professionally since being admitted into the program. While the program can be rigorous and requires a lot of resources to succeed, there has always been a vast amount of support provided by the professors, staff, peers and community members. This program has done so much for me, and I am confident that UNC Charlotte has something to offer you too!
