How would you describe the research UNC Charlotte does and your role in it?
One of the strengths of UNC Charlotte is its focus on interdisciplinary programs and research. I have worked with and collaborated with a number of faculty and students outside of computing as part of my research. I encourage students outside of computing to take my courses.
What's your favorite thing about being a faculty member of your graduate program?
My favorite thing is mentoring students in research. Particularly with my Ph.D. students, we spend years working together, where I get to be a part of their transformation from a student taking direction from faculty members to a researcher forming their own goals and becoming an expert in their research.
What's your favorite memory of working with or mentoring a graduate student?
My favorite memories are getting to hood my Ph.D. students at graduation and celebrating with them as they start their future careers.
How long have you taught at UNC Charlotte?
I have been at UNC Charlotte since 2005.
What kinds of experiences can soon-to-be graduate students expect to participate in?
Many students in our master’s programs participate in internships, getting to directly apply what they are learning in the classroom in the workplace. I also encourage my Ph.D. students to find internships in the industry to explore the kinds of roles they could pursue with their degrees.
Why should a student choose UNC Charlotte for their graduate degree?
UNC Charlotte has such a broad and deep selection of coursework, providing students with the opportunity to pursue their interests both within and outside of their focus areas and customize their degrees.

The programs within the College of Computing and Informatics are very hands-on. Courses frequently include projects where students learn real-world skills while working with a team of other students.
How would you describe the graduate community at UNC Charlotte?
The graduate community at UNC Charlotte is very supportive of each other. I have seen how students support each other in their coursework, discuss their work experiences and participate in outside activities together. Whether a graduate student is starting right after their undergraduate degree or returning to school after many years working, students will find others going through similar experiences.
