Health Psychologists use a multidisciplinary perspective to promote positive health behaviors, encourage behavioral change and behavioral maintenance. Health Psychologists are frequently part of multidisciplinary teams conducting research and delivering interventions in academic, clinical, research, governmental and community settings. The Ph.D. in Health Psychology offers training in one of the following areas of emphasis: Clinical Psychology, Community Health Psychology or General Health Psychology.

History (MA)

Within the three main geographic fields of the United States, Europe, and Latin America, the History Department has particular strengths in the history of: African Diaspora and African-Americans, from slavery to civil rights; Old and New South; War and Peace from the 16th century to the present; Business/Technology/Medicine/Environment and Urban History. A specialization in Public History, with a focus on new media, is also offered.

Interdisciplinary Studies (MA) (formerly Liberal Studies)

The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies is an interdisciplinary program where students have the flexibility to design individualized curricula around broad intellectual interests and research focuses. Students can take graduate courses in a wide variety of academic departments and across colleges to further their studies related to their particular topic. Students complete a final capstone project to demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of their particular area of study.

Language and Culture Studies: Translation and Interpreting Studies-Spanish and English (CERT)

Students in the certificate program study the history, theory, methodology and profession of translation and interpreting and work in the analysis of different types of written and oral discourse. Students become familiar with computer-assisted translation, sight translation, simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and develop advanced post-editing skills. Translating and interpreting is done in both directions of the language pair: Spanish and English.

Languages & Culture Studies: Business Language (CERT)

Graduate Certificate in Languages and Culture Studies in the study of Business Language with concentrations in German and Spanish. It is designed for Early Entry, post- baccalaureate, graduate, and post-graduate students. Students typically complete the required 12 graduate credit hours in 2-3 semesters, and may begin the program in either the Fall, Spring or Summer semester.

Latin American Studies (MA)

The Master of Arts in Latin American Studies provides students with the skills and knowledge to understand and analyze the societies of Latin America and the Caribbean—a region of key importance in the age of globalization and mass migration. The program provides an excellent foundation for advanced graduate study in the humanities, social sciences, and law. It is also designed to prepare the growing number of students who seek careers in the foreign service and other government agencies as well as those who will seek employment in non-governmental organizations with an international or cross-cultural orientation or in international business. It also serves as an important qualification for individuals in education and the social services who work with the burgeoning Hispanic population of North Carolina. The MA in Latin American Studies can be customized for United States military participating in the Foreign Area Officer (FAO) training program, such that the program can be completed within 12 months.

The Ph.D. degree program in Applied Mathematics is designed to enable students to master a significant body of mathematics, including a specialty in applied mathematics; relate this knowledge to a coherent area of science or engineering; and to carry on fundamental research in applied mathematics at a nationally competitive level. Recipients of this degree will, according to their abilities and choice of sub-specialty, be able to work effectively in a research and development environment involving mathematical or statistical analysis and modeling in business, government or industry; teach mathematics at the college or university level; or carry on fundamental research in their area of specialty.
