Navigating doctoral study with growth, balance and support from UNC Charlotte
As a third-year Ph.D. student in Computing and Information Systems, I see this semester as a key milestone in my academic journey. My primary goal is to complete the written and oral qualifying examinations—a challenge that requires discipline, preparation and an extensive literature review. It remains an essential part of the process!
My PhD advisor, Marlon Mejias, has challenged me to stay focused and accountable. As a retired Army officer, I understand the value of discipline, perseverance and mission-focused leadership, and I appreciate having an advisor who reinforces these qualities.
Balancing my doctoral studies with owning an IT business, being a husband and father of three, supporting two children pursuing engineering degrees and serving as a UNC Charlotte Graduate Ambassador has taught me the importance of balance and wellness. This semester, I hope to grow academically, personally and professionally.
My graduate experience has continually reminded me that with the right support network, infrastructure and perseverance, challenges can become growth opportunities. For prospective graduate students, the journey is demanding—but it can also be transformative.
So, Bring on the qualifying exams. I am NOT SCARED!
