Why did you choose UNC Charlotte over other universities?
I applied to several universities, but UNC Charlotte stood out to me for a few reasons. First, the academic program really caught my attention. It allows me to concentrate on my passion for data science while also giving me the security of a broader computer science foundation. That balance was very important to me, since I wanted both specialization and flexibility in my graduate studies. Another factor was the campus itself. Not every university offers the same kind of environment, but UNC Charlotte has a beautiful and welcoming campus that creates a comfortable space to learn and grow. For me, it felt like the right mix of strong academics and a supportive atmosphere, which made it the ideal choice.
If you work outside of UNC Charlotte, tell us about your career. What lessons have you learned in your courses that you could apply on the job?
Outside of UNC Charlotte, I’ve been working as a Business Intelligence Intern at JLL. In this role, I work with data analysis, reporting, and visualization to support decision-making. What’s been interesting is how directly my coursework connects to the work I do. Classes in databases, data mining, and machine learning have given me both the technical foundation and the problem-solving mindset to handle real-world data challenges.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve applied is learning how to approach data systematically, cleaning it, analyzing it, and then communicating insights clearly. I’ve also seen the value of collaboration, since a lot of projects in class mirror the teamwork and communication skills needed on the job. Overall, the program has made me more confident in taking on complex tasks at work and understanding the bigger picture behind the tools I use.
What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?
The best part of my academic experience so far has been the wide range of opportunities I’ve had, both academically and professionally. In my first two semesters, I worked part-time on campus, which gave me a sense of balance as I adjusted to graduate school. After that, my journey took a big turn. I landed a summer internship that turned into a co-op, I secured a graduate assistant position, I was accepted as a teaching assistant (though I sadly had to decline due to restrictions), and I also started working with a professor on his research.
Looking back, I feel really grateful for how much I’ve been able to explore in such a short time. These experiences have not only helped me grow my skills and confidence but also made me feel more connected to the community at UNC Charlotte. It’s been exciting, challenging, and very rewarding.
How would you describe UNC Charlotte to someone considering a graduate program?
UNC Charlotte feels like a place where academics and opportunity meet, all within a campus that feels like home. I’d like to describe it as a well-balanced compass since it keeps you focused on your direction while still letting you discover new paths.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying to your program?
If someone is considering applying to this program, I’d tell them to really think about what they want out of their graduate studies and how UNC Charlotte can support that. The program gives you the flexibility to focus on a concentration you’re passionate about, while also keeping the door open to explore other areas in computer science. My advice would be to come in with an open mind. Don’t just stick to one area; take advantage of the resources, electives, and research opportunities the program offers.
I’d also say it helps to be proactive. Connect with professors, get involved in projects, and use the campus environment to grow both academically and personally. If you’re motivated and willing to put yourself out there, this program can really help you shape your career in a meaningful way.
Is there anything else you would like to share that may help readers learn about UNC Charlotte graduate programs?
One thing I’d like to share is that UNC Charlotte’s graduate programs really strike a balance between academic rigor and a supportive environment. The faculty are approachable and genuinely invested in student success, and there are plenty of opportunities to apply what you learn through research, projects, and collaborations. The diversity on campus also makes it a very inclusive place; you get to meet people from all over the world and learn from their perspectives.
I think what sets UNC Charlotte apart is that it’s not just about classes, it’s about the overall experience. The campus, resources, and community together create an environment where you can push yourself academically while also feeling at home.
