Why did you choose UNC Charlotte for graduate school?
I chose UNC-Charlotte for graduate school because I knew several school counselors who had graduated from the program. They were well-prepared for the profession and spoke highly of the supportive professors. Additionally, I wanted the flexibility to continue teaching while pursuing my studies, and UNC-Charlotte offers the opportunity to plan our own schedules and pace.
What was the transition like from undergraduate to graduate school?
My transition from undergraduate to graduate school was unique, as it came after a ten-year career teaching middle school. I was nervous about returning to school after being out of academia for so long, but UNC-Charlotte made the transition easier. The program is made up of people from all walks of life, and I never felt alone during the process.
How does a UNC Charlotte graduate degree prepare you for your future?
UNC-Charlotte prepares me to be a school counselor with course options that are relevant to the field both in and out of schools. Professors allow us to view the different courses and their content through our own theoretical lenses, allowing us to be “theoretically sound, technically eclectic.” The practicum and internships give us experience under ample supervision before entering our careers.
What is your favorite thing about Charlotte’s location?
My favorite thing about Charlotte’s location is the fact that I can ride the light rail from NoDa for free!
