Q&A with Savannah

How does a UNC Charlotte graduate degree prepare you for your future?

In addition to equipping me with the education and practical skills necessary to pursue a career in counseling, one of the most impactful aspects of earning a graduate degree from UNCC has been the opportunity to learn from professors who are not only experts in the field but also supportive mentors. Additionally, UNCC sharpened my critical thinking skills and prepared me to apply my knowledge in real-world settings. More specifically, the counseling department’s emphasis on self-reflection encouraged me to critically examine how I interpret the world around me. It was through this continual introspection that I was able to challenge my ideas and more thoughtfully consider not only the kind of counselor I aspire to be, but also the kind of person I want to be. Ultimately, this experience fostered both my professional development and personal growth, leaving me better prepared for whatever the future holds.

What’s your favorite graduate school memory?

It’s difficult to pick one, but I’d say some of my favorite memories are all the little moments between classes—simple conversations with friends and professors that made my graduate experience feel personal and meaningful. It was in those sincere interactions that I felt the most connected and supported. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the most inspiring and thoughtful people while at UNC Charlotte. The community here is what made my experience truly significant and memorable.

How can a new student make the most of their semester/graduate experience?

Find what you love and lean into that! There are so many opportunities, but the ones that you’re most passionate about will be the most rewarding and fulfilling. I also believe that staying curious and open-minded can lead to unexpected discoveries that enrich your experiences and broaden your perspective.

How did you find a work-life balance?

This is an area that I’m continuously refining. I‘ve had to learn to give myself permission to be imperfect. At first, I was trying to do it all—constantly performing at my highest level—but you can only function like that for so long before you burnout. I realized that the harmony between work and life is found in giving myself grace. Knowing which one I needed to prioritize each day was key for me.
