Q&A with Olivia
Why did you choose to attend UNC Charlotte for graduate school?
I chose to attend UNC Charlotte for graduate school because UNC Charlotte showed me how much they value their students and the community. The small classroom sizes were optimal for my learning and allowed me to grow as a student, while also developing connections with my professors and classmates. It was clear to me that UNC Charlotte prioritizes the student experience, and gives all students the best opportunities to succeed throughout life.
What did you enjoy most about UNC Charlotte’s campus and location?
My favorite part about UNC Charlotte’s campus was how it felt like a small town located in a large city. I felt connected with each and every student on campus, while also having access to the knowledge and experiences that a major city like Charlotte provides. I also appreciate the diversity of the student body and the different backgrounds all students come from. There’s always someone you can connect with on campus; someone with shared experiences that allow you to feel seen. Campus is also big enough to explore a wide variety of hobbies and interests, while having the chance to meet new people everyday. My extracurricular activities while at UNC Charlotte made my graduate school experience even more memorable and valuable.
Did you participate in any teaching assistantships or research assistantships? How valuable were those experiences?
During my graduate program at UNC Charlotte, I was employed as a graduate assistant at the University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE), where I was a mentor for undergraduate students and helped them grow their academic skills. This opportunity was invaluable to my growth and learning as a student at UNC Charlotte, and I would truly recommend it to any graduate student. It helped me develop my network of fellow students and educators, and showed me the importance of community. Working at the UCAE allowed me to gain academic skills such as time management and goal setting, while also giving me the opportunity to empower and educate students.
What advice would you give to prospective and current UNC Charlotte graduate students?
I would advise prospective and current UNC Charlotte graduate students to explore their community. Even graduate students have access to endless clubs on campus, and many resources available to them. Volunteer at the student pantry, apply for jobs at learning centers, and reach out to the community outside of school. I am not originally from Charlotte; I moved here for my graduate program. I have learned that Charlotte is a very giving, supportive city that truly cares for its community. I also have learned that there are so many people moving here, people that want to build their community and network. There are so many opportunities to explore new hobbies and meet new people. Don’t be afraid to branch out, you will find a place you connect with before you know it.
