Q&A with Morgan

Why did you choose to attend UNC Charlotte for graduate school?

I chose UNC Charlotte for my Master of Public Health because I wanted to expand my expertise into a broader field that would give me the autonomy to collaborate, work with communities, and contribute to the greater good. Public health allows me to serve in a meaningful way while addressing real-world challenges, and this program aligned with my passion for impactful, community-driven work. Additionally, the university’s location in a diverse urban city-similar to my hometown—was important to me. It provided opportunities for professional and personal growth and a balanced lifestyle, ensuring that I could thrive academically while maintaining my well-being.

What skills or knowledge gained in your graduate program have been most valuable in your career?

Some of the most valuable skills and knowledge I gained in my public health graduate program that continue to benefit my career include strong organization and time management, the ability to manage multiple projects effectively, and expertise in data reporting, analytics, and applied epidemiology. I also learned the importance of building relationships, both within the field and with communities, as collaboration and community engagement are vital to public health work.

What is your favorite UNC Charlotte memory?

Some of my favorite memories from graduate school include the camaraderie with my cohort, being a member of the Graduate Public Health Association, and enjoying a beautiful campus in a great city with plenty of opportunities for exploration, learning and entertainment.

What advice would you give to prospective and current UNC Charlotte graduate students?

For prospective graduate students:
-Take time to thoroughly research programs and funding opportunities before committing.
-Develop strong time management skills early– graduate studies are demanding and require careful planning.
-Clarify your career goals and ensure that the program aligns with your long-term aspirations (even if they change over time)

For current graduate students:
-Build relationships with faculty and peers—networking opens doors for future jobs AND seek out professional development opportunities such as joining career field organizations, attending conferences, etc. Those opportunities also open doors for future jobs.
-Prioritize your well-being—life is already challenging then you add graduate school—maintain a good work-life balance, even after graduation.
-Don’t hesitate to ask for help
