The School of Social Work program’s incredible faculty have been approachable, responsive, and eased the transition to graduate school.
My cohort has been a highlight of my experience. I’ve been able to build great connections and have learned so much from everyone. The community has helped me get through some of the toughest moments of graduate school.
I’ve had the chance to do a practicum each year of my MSW program. I’ve worked at the CHHS Advising Center, Myers Park Pediatrics, and now I’m with At Home Counseling Services, Inc. I’m also a Teaching Assistant and a Research Assistant for the School of Social Work. Each experience has taught me something different and valuable.
My biggest piece of advice is to show up as your authentic self. The most meaningful parts of my experience have come from building connections with professors and peers who share similar interests and passions. Graduate school isn’t just something to get through, it’s an opportunity to shape your future. And ask for help when you need it.
It’s something I’m still learning, but I’ve found that staying connected to the work I truly care about helps create a sense of balance. Graduate school can be demanding, so it’s important to recognize when you need rest or slow down. We’re not robots, and our capacity changes day to day. Boundaries are a form of self-preservation.
You’re not in graduate school just to absorb information. You’re here to participate, engage, and speak up. Yes, you’ll gain a great deal of knowledge. But your perspective, presence, and voice are meaningful contributions to your program.
