Q&A with Kwame

Why did you choose UNC Charlotte for graduate school?

UNC Charlotte stood out to me based on strong recommendations from my three cousins, who completed their undergraduate studies there. The positive experiences shared by my relatives, the supportive academic environment, and the favorable weather, which closely resembles the climate in my home country, making the transition smoother.

How does a UNC Charlotte graduate degree prepare you for your future?

As an international student, planning for the future often comes with unique challenges, especially navigating work authorization and employment opportunities post-graduation. However, my graduate experience at UNC Charlotte has been instrumental in turning those potential hurdles into manageable steps.

Beyond the rigorous academic training and exposure to real-world applications, the support from the University Career Center has been a game-changer. From résumé workshops to one-on-one career counseling and employer networking events, I’ve received tailored guidance to understand and pursue career paths that align with my goals and visa requirements. This degree doesn’t just equip me with knowledge, it empowers me with the tools, resources, and confidence to thrive in a competitive global job market.

What’s your favorite graduate school memory so far?

My favorite graduate school memory has been the opportunity to meet and connect with people from various backgrounds. Engaging in conversations, sharing cultural experiences, and learning about different perspectives have been truly enriching. Whether it was during group projects, campus events, or casual meetups, every interaction broadened my worldview and deepened my appreciation for diversity. These moments have made my experience at UNC Charlotte not just academically fulfilling, but personally transformative.

How can a new student make the most of their semester/graduate experience?

To make the most of your graduate experience, especially as a new student, be intentional about both your academic and personal growth. Start by building relationships, connect with classmates, attend networking events, and join student organizations. These connections can open doors to collaboration, mentorship, and job opportunities. Take advantage of resources like the Career Center, and faculty office hours, they’re there to help you succeed. Most importantly, don’t shy away from stepping out of your comfort zone. Embrace cultural diversity, ask questions, seek help when needed, and stay organized with clear goals for each semester. The more you engage, the more rewarding your graduate journey will be.
