Q&A with Jasmine
Why did you choose UNC Charlotte for graduate school?
I lived in Charlotte for about 7 years before I decided to return to school to receive another Master’s degree. I realized I couldn’t call myself a native if I had not attended one of the best schools in the city! I have always heard from other graduates about their great experience at UNCC and how awesome and proud they were to be 49ers. I wanted the opportunity to experience that, but so much more. I heard how great the professors were on campus and how the school aims for success and a strong sense of belonging. This feeling of being part of a supportive community drew me to UNC Charlotte.
What was the transition like from undergraduate to graduate school?
The transition from undergrad to graduate school was challenging since I had taken a break in between. It isn’t easy working a full-time job with classes and clinical hours all in a week to ensure I am upholding/completing all requirements to become licensed. I think the most significant difference between the two is that, being older, there’s more responsibility to maintain than being in undergraduate school straight out of high school. UNCC is the second school where I’ve decided to obtain another degree, and I think it was an easy transition since I have more experience. Now that I am married, I have more support than ever in balancing everything alone. Also, UNCC online classes have helped with my day-to-day life, having a little more flexibility than being on campus in a classroom.
How did you find a work-life balance?
The best way to find a work-life balance is to make a schedule for certain things or a certain number of things to accomplish. Giving yourself a cut-off will allow you to take a break and have freedom while still getting work done. Reinforcing the hard work you put in with a treat is always helpful to persevere during the semester. But most importantly, practicing mindfulness wellness (yoga, gym time, walks, swimming, etc.) and prioritizing self-care is crucial. Life is about living, and we can not let the stressors consume all life has to offer within the experience of it all.
How does a UNC Charlotte graduate degree prepare you for your future?
UNC Charlotte is one of the most outstanding schools for preparing students for their field of study. They make sure not only that you meet the criteria and prerequisites within the survey, but they also extend experience in the field. The support from UNC Charlotte advisors and professors is unparalleled.
