Q&A with Diana
How long have you taught at UNC Charlotte?
I have been a full-time faculty member at UNC Charlotte since 2005 (19 years). I began as a part time (adjunct) faculty member, then began a full time lecturer. I was fortunate to make the rare step over into a tenure track position as an assistant professor, then associate professor. Now I am a full professor and director of the School of Social Work.
How does your graduate program(s) of instruction establish important connections to industry professionals?
The Master of Social Work Program is structured with experience each semester that places students in real life learning situations in internship settings in local communities. Students learn in hands-on community-based settings in social service agencies, hospitals and other clinical environments, school districts, governmental service organizations, and other unique places where social work is practiced. Our MSW students have opportunities to work alongside seasoned social workers to refine their clinical skills and refine their understanding of ethical practices. Many students are invited to work at their practicum sites following their graduation.
What’s your favorite thing about being a faculty member of your graduate program?
I enjoy coming to work every day, and am invigorated by the energy and optimism of our graduate students. They are curious and courageous in how they view the world’s social problems, and are eager to learn how to reduce obstacles for individuals, families, and communities who are experiencing difficulties. Our students are hard workers, unwilling to settle for tolerating oppressive systems.
Why should a student choose UNC Charlotte for their graduate degree?
UNC Charlotte is a place were new ideas are encouraged. We are a relatively young institution and are not held back by conforming to the way things have always been done. We have always had caring, committed leadership who have fostered a climate for innovation. The 49er’s “prospecting spirit” is present here, with something new, innovative, and unique right around the corner.
