What has been your driving force for enrolling in your degree program?
I’m pursuing a Master of Science in Information Technology at UNC Charlotte, with a concentration in data science. My driving force has been a growing interest in how AI and large language models are reshaping the way organizations use data. I wanted to move beyond traditional analytics tools and build a deeper, more technical understanding. I see this program as the foundation for reaching my long-term goal of working in data science and applied AI. The coursework, certifications, and campus involvement, including the degree I’m gaining here, are giving me the technical depth and confidence to pursue that path. This program helps me bridge the gap between my analytics knowledge and data-driven AI.
Why did you choose UNC Charlotte over other universities?
UNC Charlotte stood out to me because the M.S. in Information Technology program aligned with my career goals. It combines a strong analytics foundation with specialization in AI and Machine Learning. Beyond academics, the campus offers multiple opportunities. This place is where I could grow technically while also being part of a genuinely supportive, blended environment.
How would you describe UNC Charlotte to prospective graduate students?
I’d describe UNC Charlotte as a place where academic rigor meets real opportunity, all within a genuinely welcoming and diverse community. Whether it’s through coursework, leadership opportunities, or student organizations, there’s a real sense that the university wants to see you succeed — not just academically, but as a whole person.
What are some of your favorite activities or places to visit in Charlotte beyond campus?
Beyond campus, I love spending my mornings on the forest trails around Charlotte — there’s something really refreshing about starting the day surrounded by nature. I’m also a fitness enthusiast, and staying active is a big part of my routine here. I recently participated in the 5K Gold Rush, which was a great way to combine my love for running with the local community spirit. Charlotte has been a great city for balancing an active lifestyle with graduate school.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying to your program?
My advice would be to come in with an open mind and a willingness to explore. The MS in Information Technology program gives you the flexibility to specialize in areas like data analytics and AI. However, the real value comes from combining that specialization with involvement outside the classroom — whether through student organizations, leadership roles, or connecting with the broader graduate community. Also, connect with everyone to build your network and participate in events beyond academics.
