Q&A with Alyssa
Why did you choose UNC Charlotte for graduate school?
There are a lot of programs that are designed for a future in applied behavior analysis, but many of those programs are asynchronous. Many people prefer these programs because it doesn’t interfere with their work schedules. However, I learn best through conversations and interactions and UNC Charlotte provided that for me by allowing for synchronous classes. Along with evening classes, my work schedule wasn’t impacted too much.
How does a UNC Charlotte graduate degree prepare you for your future?
My program not only focused on how ABA looks today, but it also looked at where it started and where it could be going. I think having this overall view of how ABA has transformed over the years has helped me have a better understanding of where it is going. The program provided the real-life challenges that surrounds ABA and then provided perspective to how we can elevate the field.
How did you find a work-life balance?
I think the work-life balance is one of the most challenging but important things when it comes to graduate school. The course load is going to be more than what you have experienced in the past and time-management is crucial. I worked a full-time job while also attending my classes and there were moments where it would get overwhelming. At the beginning of each semester, the first thing I did was look at the syllabus and write down all the due dates for assignments. Then, I would create a weekly schedule and a daily schedule to breakdown what I needed to accomplish for the week and what assignments I could do each day. I also made sure that I didn’t sacrifice things that were important to me, such as going to the gym. Even when I felt like my schedule was full, I made time for the gym because it was a way for me to relieve stress and have some time for myself in between work and class.
How can a new student make the most of their semester/graduate experience?
Make sure you are utilizing your professors. They are there to help you and they want to see you succeed. Even if it feels like you’re asking too many questions or you feel that you are bothering them, continue to connect with them. They should be your primary source of information when it comes to your course work.
