UNC Charlotte offers remote and in-person resources to help navigate your journey.

Distance learning presents unique opportunities and challenges. Luckily, UNC Charlotte offers so many remote and in-person resources to help navigate your journey as a distance graduate student.

#1 Did I Put That On My Calendar?

As I type this tip, I am looking at my calendar to assure myself that I didn’t miss a discussion post or assignment due date. The syllabus, course requirements and deadlines are conveniently stored in Canvas, a course management system that supports online learning. When the courses begin, add the due dates for all your course assignments to your calendar. I find it helpful to link all deadlines to my Google calendar. There is nothing quite like a Google calendar reminding you what’s due ahead of time. These reminders are like an alarm clock for your assignments  — a must-have!

#2 Time Is Of The Essence

Don’t procrastinate! Establish a learning schedule that works for you. As a distance graduate student, coursework can be the furthest thing on our minds because we don’t have a set time to be on campus in a classroom. Setting a schedule is essential. Maybe it’s during your lunch break or when everyone is asleep in your house because that’s the most peaceful time. Whatever the case, establish the best time to finish assignments ahead of schedule so that you are meeting deadlines! If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to your professors or advisor. Many of them offer virtual office hours!

#3 Yes, I am A GOAL-digger

Set realistic goals one step at a time until your success looks how you want it. Remember, being a goal-digger doesn't mean you overextend yourself or become exhausted. It means setting boundaries and goals that will make you successful. Set goals that will help push you into progression for your next steps as a graduate student.

#4 Who Can I Call On?

You are not alone! Utilize online office hours regularly and ask questions of instructors or peers if needed via an online connection. Your fellow online students are also a great resource to discover even more tips for online learning success. You can utilize Canvas to connect with other graduate students in your classes. I found someone in my class that lives in my neighborhood — several miles from campus! You will likely find other students in all phases of their graduate degree. Don’t be afraid to start the conversation.

#5 Take Care of Yourself

Be kind to yourself! Reward yourself as you accomplish things! Yes, take breaks from technology, and don’t forget to get up and move. The Center for Graduate Life and Learning offers in-person and virtual events that promote self-care. Check your emails to stay current on events they are hosting.
